The “Key” to Guest Safety: Hotel Access Control Systems

Access control systems are a critical part of hotel security solutions. It’s a massive job to manage a hotel and protect guests and staff members. There are restricted areas within the hotel that need to be monitored and protected. Also, guest privacy and security are vital for them to have a safe and enjoyable experience. Here are some of the ways that access control helps hotels and motels remain secure.

Guest Privacy

While guests understand that housekeeping and maintenance have access to their rooms, the knowledge that no one else does is comforting. There are limited numbers of access cards issued for one room, and no other guests can get in without a card programmed for that room. Management and staff revoke and assign access to the rooms easily and they are changed after every guest checks out. When checking into the hotel, the front desk agent takes a set off access cards out and programs them for a guest’s specific room.

Access cards also allow hotel patrons into amenities such as a pool or gym while preventing others from entering who shouldn’t have access. Modern hotels provide a secure and private place for patrons to stay.

Convenience for Staff

The old lock and key systems simply aren’t convenient for hotel staff. Depending on the size of the hotel, maintenance and housekeeping staff members would need to carry a giant set of keys around and back in the day they did. It would be a pain to change the locks after every guest. Cleaning and maintenance employees need access to guest rooms and laundry, while the kitchen staff needs access to dining and kitchen areas.

With access control, each employee has one card that grants them access to the spaces they need to do their job. All the cards can be activated and deactivated remotely. Hotel managers have access to logs that show who tried to access what areas for management purposes and to ensure that employees aren’t trying to access restricted areas.

Every hotel has sensitive areas such as rooms where safes are and staff-only areas. The access control system regulates who can enter each room in a hotel or motel. It allows hoteliers to restrict entire floors if necessary. It’s an important security solution that allows the right people in while keeping suspicious and unauthorized people out.
